We are constantly searching for that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
surfboard and one that can do everything! Competitive edge!
We identified two such critters and they are: The Channin Surfboards
Tony Caramanico "Nose Rider" and the Joel Tudor "Papa Joe" model
with side bites. It's funny since the two are great friends
and their ware glassed at Tony Channin's factory in Encinita's,
California. These two models include the best glass job in the
world! It's evident in the tint and it is Rock Hard baby!
70% Glass and 30% resin say's Mr. Channin as he teaches his
crew how to drag resin using his patented techniques refined
over the past 41 years. When you purchase a TC Nose Rider, you
support New York's finest surfer and have near direct access
to the designer's brain. Tony "C" is my hero and a mentor to
me as well. Got a question? I'll get you an answer! Straight
from the Stallion! Yo Tony! This year we are supporting Tony
"C" and his wife Charlotte because we believe that we can't
venture outward without covering our home turf and hometown
hero who can flat out surf!
The Channin TC model rocks and is extremely fast. If positioned
properly, you will experience a tool with supreme glide allowing
one to beat almost any section with ease and paddle like a board
one foot longer and an inch thicker than it! If you don't crouch
a little more than normal, it's speed will keep your head jerking
backward like flying down the LIE to the BQE with a Nissan 300
ZX in the HOV lane! Pull over!
The Joel Tudor Papa Joe was my last Baby (3 years running) and
it kept me safe during the huge 2003 Hurricane Fabian Swell
(Saturday) that was pulsing set waves up to 12-14 feet by Hawaiian
count. Woody and I surfed the outer break at Cupsogue near the
wreck in Westhampton beside the Moriches Inlet during the early
morning push. The Papa Joe never quivered but instead carved
the waves with extreme bite when applying great pressure during
the first bottom turn and after the next turn up high, the board
shot out like a rocket ready for another heavy bottom turn.
In small surf, the board rocks because of its supreme glide
and effortless free flow turning. If you like to get barreled,
this board is the Cat's Meow of Long boards!
In the short board world the Al Merrick Channel Islands Flyer
is an awesome choice along with the Matt Kechele short sticks
that have been engineered for our surf. The Channel Island Rob
Machado Single Fin retro is one to consider because of its lighting
fast design and free flow maneuverability. This tool has a retro
deck with a MAGICAL bottom! That's the key factor with many
GREAT surfboards; does it have a MAGICAL bottom? In many cases,
the answer is not just no but Hell No! Be careful they said!
The sleeper though, this season, is the Robert August Dodger
Kremel model that Rocks! Ask Sheriff Ed Simovich!; yep the Dude
is assigned to escort Tiger Woods during the 106th United States
Open @ Shinnecock Hills Country Club! I hear Tiger surfs too!
Yeh Right!
My second board is a 7' 6" Vortex soft surfboard that I enjoy
dearly ever since riding my partners 300ZX to the beach. It's
the greatest board in the soft surfboard world today. A tad
more expensive than most yet the superior tool that will expedite
the learning process since it's the most forgiving shape and
it has Ultimate Gliding ability! "It's like a Stewart Hydro
Glide Harry!" Fegetaboutit!
On my third wave at Backpacks, I hung 5 with ease. I took this
Body Board like thing in the main lineup at "Ditch" and sat
between a Harbor and a Stewart. I managed to get up first and
took on the two yahoo's and one being my friend; Thor! The body
board kicked butt as its shape resembles that of a Stewart Hydro
Glide! We like Vortex so much that we revamped our entire surf
lesson fleet of surfboards under the Vortex label! The Vortex
Manufacturing Company is The Company to Benchmark because Owner
Brian is the man! Additionally, these are my brothers from my
former hometown of Oceanside, CA. (319 N. Clementine!) whom
are great to work with as we are rapidly becoming a TEAM. We
are looking for a Long Island Representative for Vortex. Please
call me at our shop hotline if you interested. I have a few
questions to ask. Aloha, Ed.
Surf
Tech
We are proud to inform you of the Surf Technician Line of Surfboards
that represents the Third Generation of Surfboards. We have
been with SURFTECH from their beginning and continue to forge
a rich relationship with the Team. This year, we expect to double
our sales because of its popularity. What we look for in surfboards
today is one that is Light and Stiff. The SURFTECH Line provides
this feature and allows the user much more control and especially
the Long boards. These surfboards allow one to "hit the lip"
harder and perform "floaters" with grace and ease. This year,
I am excited about the McCoy Nugget, Infinity "Performance Nose-Rider,
Randy French "Fun Shape", Robert August "Wingnut Series", Randy
Rarrick "Performance Model" and the David Nuuiwa Nose-Rider
that I secured recently. Since most surfboard damage is through
incidental contact, this Third Generation surfboard line provides
a practical solution.

There are no better folks than Robert, Wingnut and Sam! Finally
got to meet them last summer at the shop and look forward to
another visit this year! These are one of the easiest boards
to surf as we have sold a tremendous number over the years.
We maintain a very close relationship with this crew as they
are easy going as their product. Artist Dave of the Robert August
Surf Wear division is responsible for our new Woody logo that
is a hit! A great example of customer service at its best. Mahalo
David! I like the Robert August "What I Ride" model along with
the "Wingnut" models and really like the new Dodger Kremel model
that I believe is the sleeper. Again, an easy surfboard to ride
and ideal for surfers of all experience levels. 8 Assorted models
coming in April 2004.
Channel
Island Surf Boards
Al Merrick is the man! Just ask my partner Woody who raves
about his new 7'0" "Single-Fin Retro" that is off the chain!
This surfboard has a magical bottom and a concave from nose
to tail. This wave assault tool can paddle like a long board
and it is FAST! The bonus of this fine specimen is the glass
and tint job by the "Moonlight" glassing company that is one
of the best fun / performance shapes on the market. You will
find many copycat models that will never top the original product.
The Channel Island Tuflite (SURFTECH) series was our biggest
seller last season and makes for an awesome travel weapon. Say
no more about the Flyer / Flyer II, Mongrel, Sashimi, MX, MBM,
MBB, K-Boards and the Tri-Plane Hull series. Besides having
such a great product, we are pleased with their superior customer
service that the Channel Island Team delivers. Much thanks to
our Sales Representative; Mahalo Aaron!
To Al Merrick and his Advertising Staff, a big mahalo for supporting
this years Pacifika: New York Hawaiian Film Festival 2004 that
was a great success! Your stickers and other paraphernalia were
presented to many guests and you represented the Surfers of
the World with the great CI Icon! This years event opened with
"The Ride" by fellow Hawaiian Nathan Kurosawa that has given
us yet another tool to better understand the "Sport of the Kings"
and for those new to the sport, an excellent decription of a
true Amabassador to the Sport; My Hawaiian Hero:Duke Kahanamoku!

Rockaway Beach Surfboards
What can I say about Tom Senna? A great businessman and one
of my hero's! Like many of our friends Tommy is a work with
you kind of a guy and easy going. Tommy has been in the business
for awhile and an original at the Surf Expo along with Al Merrick.
Tommy has brought a line that is very well shaped, nice and
extremely affordable! You can't touch this price even with a
twelve-foot pole! He has made many parents smile because the
price in regard to the product that can't be matched! We have
a huge line and will be stocking a NEW line of Retro's and shorties
soon! Tom too is very gracious with his surfing knowledge and
we are proud to be working closely with a home-boy from the
Empire State. Tommy's middle name is Empire! Fegetaboutit! We
have 30 assorted boards with more on the way.
Joel
Tudor
We are proud to bring you one of the best performance lines
on the market today. Our sales representative mentioned that
many pro's rode Joel's retro models in Australia during a film
campaign and were stoked with the designs. It was said that
Rob Machado too was influence by Joel's retro quiver and got
Al Merrick to design the Rob Machado influenced "Single-fin
Retro!" I rode my Papa Joe model for nearly three years and
remains as one the best boards I have ever experienced. This
model represents one of the best shapes on the long board market
today and one that may be ridden in any condition. If you could
have just one long board one should consider the Papa Joe shaped
by master craftsman Bill Shrosbee. According to Joel's Dad,
Bill is able to process input by the design team and come up
with a magical product on the first cut! We will have an ample
stock this season that will be littered with those retro models
many of the professional rave about! Our service representative,
Brady Mitchell, is great to work with along with Joel's parents.

Byrne
Surf
The happiest duo I met at Surf Expo 2004 regarding Brother Michael
Baron and James "JD" Dunn! They have a killer T-shirt and an
awesome product. Michael too is a master craftsman and his sister
owns one of the coolest surfing retail stores in the biz there
in Carlsbad, CA. We have been working together for sometime
and welcome a nice line-up for Summer 2004. Tom Carrol is a
great representative of this product that we are proud to display.
Coming in April 2004: 6' 6" & 6' 8" Egg Pill, 6' 10" & 7' 0"

Matt Kechele is a surfboard innovator and a master craftsman
too. We have worked closely with Matt and his staff for many
years. Matt has found time to teach many youngsters about our
sport during past Quiksilver surf clinics that we were a part
of. It's a facet that you will not find too often. I am very
proud to showcase Matt's ware because these boards are great
wave assault tools for Long Island surf! Matt is the first to
create a rocker machine that you may learn about while visiting
his website.
You can see his line-up April 3, 2004! 6' 0", 6' 2" & 6' 6"

Channin
Surfboards of Encinitas, California
We are proud to inform you about a product line that has the
best glass job in the industry today. Tony Channin is a master
craftsman and truly understands his craft. Tony and his staff
are very gracious with their surfboard knowledge and will answer
any questions regarding their product. Co-owner Randy Wong is
a master craftsman as well and an integral part of the operation.
Randy spent many years as I have in our hometown of Kaneohe
on the island of Oahu. We currently work with Kevin Shaunessy
whom is the Production Manager. Kevin too, is so gracious with
his knowledge and offered is professional input. Every buyer
should understand the technical aspects of a surfboard before
purchase. We are here to provide that knowledge and obtain our
knowledge straight from the source. We will be featuring the
Tony Caramanico (TC) Model this year that represents one of
the best performance models on the market today. The TC model
will go where one is looking and nose-ride like there ain't
no tomorrow! Like the Ben Aipa Sitngers, this model incorporates
a "soft" stinger rail shape thus reducing the turning radius
allowing for free-flow turning. We will enhance the line this
year with Channin's Siren Model and a host of Performance long
boards too that will arrive in April 2004 just in time for spring.
New in April 2004: 7' 8" & 8' 0" Soul Desires (Siren Series),
9' 0" CL1, 9' 6" CL2, 9' 6" CLD, 9' 8" CNR and a 9' 4" and 8'
6" Tony "C" model. Channin provides the Glass finish for Joel
Tudor and Reynolds Yater Surfboards!
Velzy
Surfboards
One of the great pioneers of our sport that is still forging
ahead. "Dale Velzy began shaping surfboards like most shapers
of his era -- in the family garage. He started out -- in Hermosa
Beach in 1949 -- repairing and then reshaping Simmons boards.
Joe Quigg, instrumental in the evolution of the Malibu Chip
and other innovative board designs, drew a connection between
Bob Simmons and Dale Velzy." As a Manhattan Beach Surf Club
member, Velzy was joined by the likes of Bing Copeland, Bobby
Beathard from El Segundo, Bob Hogan and Velzy's glasser Bill
Barr. Barr would later die at the hands of a gun. "He took six
in the gut from a cop for boning his old lady," Velzy explained,
adding "-- I warned him." I was able to speak to Mr. Velzy recently
and I thanked him for doing what he did for all of us! A very
gracious person alike many great surfers. Velzy Land has always
been one of the great low key surf breaks at the North Shore
that can provide a Huge Right Barrel. We have many models to
select from and more coming this summer. We also introduced
the Velzy clothing line this season.
Stewart
Surfboards
When I see the name Stewart, I immediately see the town of San
Clemete, CA. and the great surf break Tressels. I worked at
the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station for 5 years and got
to understand the Stewart name and reputation first hand. Bill
Stewart is known for his surfing and board shaping abilities
that is "The Real Deal!" The Stewart wave assault tool is one
that glides effortlessly and one that can turn easily. I just
purchased a 9' 4" Collin McPhillips Regal and it is awesome!
It is a magical single fin that I highly recommend! I could
not believe the glide and when I stepped to the nose yesterday,
it took off like a bullet out of a rifle that allowed me to
beat that fast section in the shore break! We have a full complement
of Hydro Glides, Hydro-Hulls, Kramer LSP's and the Regal coming
soon. I wanted to say good luck to our sales Representative,
Chris Siepel, for hooking us in! Mahalo Chris! Beside the awesome
surfboards, I have introduced Stewarts clothing line that is
prime baby! I am so proud to speak of Stewart because they are
a great TEAM and they carry a household name! Pedro's Fish Tacos!
Da Best!
Hobie
Surfboards
"Hobie Alters name is synonymous with high quality
innovative surfboard design since he began building balsa wood
surfboards in his garage ion Laguna Beach in 1948. His single
fin surfboards are some of the finest in the world. Today the
Hobie line continues the tradition of innovation into the next
century with a whole new generation of contemporary designs."
The Peter Pan Slug continues as a top seller in our shop because
of its great construction that allows even the beginner to surf
with a competitive edge regarding the design. We also like to
retro eggs and will be showcasing them this year.
HIC:
Hawaiian Island Creations is a name synonymous with the Pipe.
I use to visit the Kailua Shop hoping that my mother would buy
a board but… The little shop in Kailua, formerly a bicycle shop,
was home to Michael Ho and Hans Hedeman both top prospects from
the town of Kailua. Hans was known as Mr. Backdoor and Mike
had the greatest Ride EVER at the Bay during the 1975 Smirnoff
Surfing Contest that pulsed waves in at the 35' range that is
unheard of. There were board caddies out that day as you could
feel the vibration of the waves from the roadside that wrapped
around its shore. Mike dropped into a 35 footer, got covered
by 15' plus whitewater, got lost and then appeared from the
whitewater still on his feet and kept on riding to a cheer that
I will never, ever forget! If I had to select one great surfer,
it would have to be Michael Ho. I don't know of anyone except
for Dane Kealoha, Larry Bertleman and Cheyenne Horan who could
surf a very short board in huge "Country" surf and get radical.
Andy Irons is a great example of the core guys who made this
organization. The town of Kailua is also home of the great Robbie
Naish who is the pioneer of windsurfing! Growing up in nearby
Kaneohe, we always embraced the HIC Team as our own.
Eric Arakawa was not voted as last year's shaper of the year
for nothing as he is the backbone. I have to side with Kerry
Tokoro though since he is a hometown brother from Kaneohe. Eric
understands that the Epoxy Board is the thing of the future
and where we will all be in time. These HIC boards will provide
much needed support during Hurricane Surf here as we have sold
a number to many here in Long Island. This is the kind of surfboard
that Woody rides in large surf and one every serious short boarder
should have in his or her quiver!
Our shop hotline is 631-281-0008 and if you make a mistake and
call 281-0009 you got Ding How Chinese Food Baby! My favorite
place. What a coincidence that the owners kids of Ding How went
to Boston University with the owners (Sato's - of the HIC Shop
in Waikiki) of HIC grandkids? What a connection! HIC ROCKS!
Other shapers from my hometown of Kaneohe include Chuck Andrus
and Randy Wong.
